Downingtown

Originally settled by English and European colonists in the early 18th century, Downingtown was first known as Milltown due to the many mills that were built there along the East Branch of Brandywine Creek. It was re-named in 1812 for Thomas Downing, a Quaker immigrant from England who owned many of the mills in the area. Downingtown is situated along Lincoln Highway, now part of U.S. Route 30, which was the first paved road to cross the nation from the East Coast to the West Coast.
